A Fringe Quickie (#212) with ‘Naomi Grossman: American Whore Story’

What misconceptions do you think people have about you/your show – would you like to clear them up?

I still get fans telling me they thought Pepper was a real person. But especially given how verbal this show is, anyone expecting some monosyllabic grunter is about to be shook! My comedic sensibility is probably my most obvious, defining characteristic, yet it’s something horror fans don’t even know about me. The show is also less about “American Horror Story,” and more about me: an American whore. Bet you didn’t know that about Pepper!

How will the audience remember you the morning after?

As a hustler. They say “overnight success” takes 7 years… Took me 22. See it all in 75 minutes!

What brings a nice show like yours to a place like the Edinburgh Fringe?

One of my all-time career highlights was bringing my last show to Edinburgh. Sure, being Emmy-nominated, kissed by Lady Gaga, named #1 on IMDb were great! But climbing uphill both ways in the constant drizzle with a duffle full of dildos to pour my heart out on stage every night in August? Now that’ll separate the baddies from the basic bishes. I wept when the festival ended.
