A Fringe Quickie (#152) with ‘Asian, But Wrong’

Questions answered by Ting Lim.

Q1: Aside from this Quickie, what is the most desperate marketing tactic you plan on using to get bums in seats this August? 280 chars

Scheduling a Meetup group so I can “accidentally” discover my own show like it’s a surprise. If that fails, I’ll be paying extras to casually whisper good things about it in public until it organically becomes a cult hit.

Q2: The Fringe is horribly expensive. How are you financing this run? Did you remortgage your house, sell your granny, or start an illicit side hustle?

I’m financing this run with three years of savings and a dangerous level of optimism/naivety. I usually think about the consequences of my actions after the fact. So I might be pivoting into an illicit trade post-Fringe. We’ll assess then.

Q3: All shows will have their tough days. What sophisticated self-care strategies will you employ to survive?

My self-care kit is basically either 2 KFC drumsticks, a McFlurry and a Coke, or peking duck noodles. It’s less “wellness routine” and more “emotional maintenance with snacks.”

Q4: We all have weird pre-performance rituals. What is yours, and how confused would a normal person be if they walked in on you doing it?

I write the setlist for the show – even though I already know it off by heart – on a piece of paper. Then I throw it away immediately. If a normal person walked in, they’d be confused… but mostly concerned.
