Anticipating a Memorable 20th Edition: East Neuk Festival Programme Announced

The East Neuk Festival, a much-appreciated date in Scotland’s musical calendar, has unveiled its programme for its 20th edition, showcasing a wide array of talent across classical, jazz, folk, and experimental genres, set to unfold in the scenic coastal locations of East Fife next June.

Scheduled from Wednesday 25th to Sunday 29th June 2025, the East Neuk Festival continues to be a significant event in Scotland’s cultural landscape, bringing together a notable line-up of musicians to perform in the charming settings of East Fife. This year’s programme marks a significant milestone for the festival, promising a blend of returning artists and anticipated debuts.

Returning Artists and Notable Debuts

Among those familiar to the festival audience are the esteemed violist Diyang Mei (Principal Viola of the Berlin Philharmonic) and clarinettist Sergio Pires (Principal Clarinet of the London Symphony Orchestra), both of whom first performed at East Neuk as promising young talents and have since achieved international recognition. They will be joined by four highly regarded string quartets: the Elias Quartet, the Pavel Haas Quartet, the Castalian Quartet, and the Belcea Quartet, all set to contribute their distinct interpretations to the festival’s rich tapestry of performances.

The Scottish Chamber Orchestra (SCO), a consistent presence throughout the festival’s history, will once again feature prominently, along with the accomplished guitarist Sean Shibe, who first appeared at the festival in 2012 and has since garnered global acclaim.

Adding a sense of anticipation to the programme are the festival debuts of tenor Mark Padmore and baritone James Newby, both highly respected vocalists. The jazz and folk elements of the festival also look promising, with performances from the renowned Kathryn Tickell and her band The Darkening, as well as the emerging talent of London’s jazz scene, saxophonist Tom Smith with his septet.

“I am delighted that we have such a packed programme of incredible musicians joining us in East Neuk to celebrate our 20th year… However, none of this would have been possible without the generous support of all our supporters and funders… so a huge thank you goes to them all.”

ENF Founder and Chair, Donald MacDonald CBE

Programme Highlights

The 20th-anniversary programme features a number of notable events. The opening concert promises an engaging musical journey with Principal Guest Conductor Andrew Manze leading the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, featuring Sean Shibe in Rodrigo’s popular Concierto de Aranjuez. The concert is set to conclude with Schubert’s Symphony No. 6.

A significant undertaking of the festival will be the performance of all five of Beethoven’s late quartets by the four featured string quartets. The Elias Quartet, the Pavel Haas Quartet, the Castalian Quartet, and the Belcea Quartet will each explore these complex and often profound works, pairing them with compositions by Mozart, Schubert, Adès, and Sally Beamish, the festival’s composer-in-residence.

A touch of historical resonance will be present in the performance of Beethoven’s Septet. This piece holds a special place in the festival’s history, as it was performed at a precursor event in Elie Church that ultimately led to the festival’s establishment. Some of the original musicians, including Ursula Leveaux and Alexander Janiczek, are expected to reunite with a distinguished group of colleagues from leading orchestras.

Guitarist Sean Shibe is scheduled to offer a comprehensive exploration of his instrument’s evolution with three solo concerts in Anstruther, spanning from lute music to contemporary electric guitar pieces. His programme will include historical Scottish and French lute compositions, works by Bach and Thomas Adès on acoustic guitar, and his interpretation of Steve Reich’s Electric Counterpoint. Following his performances, Palestinian oud player Nizar Rohana will return with a solo recital on the oud, an instrument with a rich history.

Schubert’s music, a recurring presence at the East Neuk Festival, will be celebrated with performances of his three song cycles by tenor Mark Padmore, baritone James Newby, and pianist Joseph Middleton. Additionally, Schubert’s String Quintet, a frequently requested piece, will be featured in the Pavel Haas Quartet’s concert.

The festival is set to conclude with a special performance featuring all four string quartets joining together as a chamber orchestra to perform Sibelius’s Andante Festivo alongside the world premiere of Field of Stars, a new commission by Sally Beamish written for these 16 musicians, drawing inspiration from their diverse backgrounds.

Jazz, Folk, and Community Engagement

The town of Anstruther will host a series of jazz and traditional music concerts, featuring the well-regarded folk artist Kathryn Tickell with her band The Darkening, the Euan Stevenson Trio performing their takes on Ellington and Evans, and the award-winning saxophonist Tom Smith bringing his septet for a performance of bluesy jazz tunes.

A community-focused event at the Bowhouse will see musicians from local groups such as StAMP (St Andrews Music Project), Fife Youth Jazz Orchestra, and East Fife Community Ensemble collaborate with composer and harpist Esther Swift and artist Esme McIntyre for the premiere of a new piece inspired by the history of Zulu fishing boats in the East Neuk harbours.

“Every East Neuk Festival is infused with a breath of fresh coastal air. The significance of the event to Fife’s communities and to its visiting artists and audiences shines through this year’s programme as it celebrates the past while looking to the future. Congratulations to everyone who makes this remarkable event happen.”

Clare Hewitt, Music Officer at Creative Scotland

Reflections and the Future

ENF Director Svend McEwan-Brown reflected on the festival’s two-decade history, noting: “In the past 20 years we have seen so much change… so right now… I feel we have so much cause to celebrate. We’re still here! And more people than ever want to come to festivals and share something extraordinary… I hope every single person who comes, goes home with a very special memory… combining music with this magical place.”

Reaching its 20th year, the East Neuk Festival‘s programme suggests a continued dedication to offering a rich and varied musical experience in a unique setting. The blend of established and emerging talent, across diverse genres, points to a festival that remains a noteworthy fixture in Scotland’s cultural calendar, promising memorable musical encounters for its audiences.
