A Fringe Quickie (#159) with ‘Mindreading and Other Freaking Wonders’

Questions answered by Christian Lavey.

Q1: Aside from this Quickie, what is the most desperate marketing tactic you plan on using to get bums in seats this August? 280 chars

I’ll be standing in the rain (it rains often in Edinburgh I heard) with flyers, pretending it’s a strategic marketing campaign rather than a Mentalist from Luxembourg slowly questioning his life choices. If that fails, I may start reading minds in the queue.

Q2: The Fringe is horribly expensive. How are you financing this run? Did you remortgage your house, sell your granny, or start an illicit side hustle?

No granny was sold. I’m financing it the old-fashioned way: by doing far too many shows, saying yes to cruise ships and every kids birthday party, and pretending that “investing in my career” sounds less terrifying than “spending all my savings on Edinburgh.”

Q3: All shows will have their tough days. What sophisticated self-care strategies will you employ to survive?

My sophisticated self-care plan is coffee (a lot), walking around Edinburgh pretending I’m not lost, and reminding myself that if a mind reader can survive cruise ship audiences and screaming kids’ birthdays, he can survive a rainy Tuesday at the Fringe.

Q4: How will the audience remember you the morning after?

They’ll remember me as the friendly Luxembourgish mind reader who looked harmless, made them laugh, and then casually revealed things he really shouldn’t have known. Basically: Columbo, but younger, better-looking, and without the worn-out raincoat.
