A Fringe Quickie (#167) with ‘Bean vs. The Robots: A Solo Show Musical’

Questions answered by Midge Lema.

Q1: Aside from this Quickie, what is the most desperate marketing tactic you plan on using to get bums in seats this August? 280 chars

I am a performer and writer, but I also love to run. I dream of running a half marathon around Edinburgh in full hair and makeup, handing out flyers, telling humans about my spaceship, and inviting them to board it. If I survive this, I hope to see those humans at my show.

Q2: We all have weird pre-performance rituals. What is yours, and how confused would a normal person be if they walked in on you doing it?

Walking around backstage like Gollum makes me feel alive, and therefore show ready. It’s very important to me to execute a near-perfect Gollum walk before a performance. A normal person observing this would be highly confused, but they are always welcome to Gollum walk with me.

Q3: If your show suddenly developed a massive ego and became the biggest diva in the 2026 Fringe, what absurd, hyper-specific item would be mandatory on its dressing room rider?

Without a doubt, Bean vs. The Robots would require a fog machine in the dressing room. One must have a fog machine at all times if one wants to be at their best. Preferably a fog machine that has a remote button, so it can be activated at anyone who dares visit the dressing room.

Q4: If all the shows running right now were at a massive Fringe house party, what is your show doing?

Bean vs. The Robots would hide in the cellar of the house. Eventually the show would dramatically burst out of a squeaky door and proceed to tell every single show at the party that they are in love, sing about space while perched on a window sill, and creep back into the cellar.
