A Timeless Battle for Workplace Equality—With a Dolly Soundtrack
Edinburgh University Footlights is bringing 9 to 5 the Musical to the Pleasance Theatre this February, proving that Dolly Parton’s sharp-edged workplace satire is as relevant as ever. With themes of fair pay, respect, and breaking down outdated office culture, the show’s humour and energy still land squarely in 2025.
Co-Director Ellie Jackson explains why it remains so powerful: “Even in 2025, we’re talking about fair pay, respect, and shaking up outdated office culture. With remote work, diversity movements, and ongoing battles for equality, this show feels as fresh as ever. Plus, with Dolly Parton’s iconic music and a story full of heart and humour, it’s the perfect blend of fun and fight-for-what’s-right energy. Who doesn’t love a feel-good revolution with killer songs?”
Finding the Right Cast to Lead the Rebellion
Bringing Violet, Doralee, and Judy to life required a rigorous casting process. With a wealth of talent on display, selecting the final lineup was no easy task. “The casting process was so fun but gruelling! It took us super long because the sheer amount of talent in the self-tapes was absolutely mind-blowing. Every audition brought something special, making it nearly impossible to choose—we were constantly amazed, debating, and rewatching tapes because there were just that many incredible performers. It was a long journey, but every moment was worth it, we’ve built an amazing cast!” says Jackson.

Balancing Tribute and Originality
With such an iconic show, the challenge lay in honouring the original performances while adding a fresh spin. Co-Director Max Middleton describes the process: “We found that before we began to experiment, using the performances of the original actors as a starting point provided a great template for our main girls when it comes to understanding their characters. This meant that from the offset they were very comfortable, and the deviations from the original in terms of characterisation feel so natural as they have come from so much effort and trial and error for our cast. Finding that comfortability in trying new choices and different directions has been essential in delivering some of the punchiest and funniest lines in the show, and you’ll certainly notice it.”

Expect the Unexpected—And Some Big Laughs
Footlights’ 9 to 5 promises plenty of unexpected moments, particularly in the dream sequences. Middleton hints at some of the most entertaining elements: “Without any spoilers, watching the whole cast lose themselves in how silly the dream sequences are is terrific. Expect outfit changes and some stupidly fun moments. Another one is just the entire cast reacting to Hannah Whelan’s Roz—your body will need to be READY for how much she lets loose with her character. Finally, each ensemble member’s reaction to their 1970s/80s style promotional ads that our producers have created for marketing has been very heart-warming!”
The Power of Dolly Parton—And That Unforgettable Theme Song
After months of rehearsals, is there any danger of getting sick of 9 to 5’s title song? Not, according to Jackson: “9 to 5 is so iconic, it’s impossible to get tired of that classic tune. Every time it’s played it fills me with excitement (but maybe I’m biased because I love our opening number!) Watching the cast bring it to life makes it even more exciting. We’ll never get sick of Dolly!”

A University Theatre Experience Like No Other
For Jackson, Footlights has been the defining part of her university journey. “Footlights has been a highlight of my university experience! The opportunity to perform and now direct has been nothing short of incredible. It’s pushed me creatively, giving me unforgettable moments that I’ll carry with me forever. I’ve met so many amazing people, and being part of such a talented, passionate community has made my time at uni so much more meaningful. The energy, the friendships, and the pure joy of bringing a show to life are unmatched. Being part of Footlights is something truly special, and I’m not ready to graduate and say goodbye to it!”

The Cathartic Joy of Workplace Revenge
While 9 to 5 is fun, it also taps into something deeply relatable. Middleton sums up the show’s universal appeal: “I think everyone can understand that eye roll moment when someone in management treats you like dirt. The cast has been channelling the power of office gossip! I have had every bar manager who’s ‘forgotten’ to give me a dinner break in mind whilst thinking of anything to do with Consolidated’s Franklin Hart. This show is really just an exploration of what would happen if we gave into our instincts to put power-drunk people through the wringer, and I hope on watching it you too are gleefully thinking of your boss going missing, never to be seen again.”
