Elizabeth Newman joined Pitlochry Festival Theatre in September 2018, bringing with her a wealth of experience from her previous role at Bolton’s Octagon Theatre, where she served as both Associate Director and Artistic Director over an eight-year period. Her leadership at Pitlochry has been marked by a series of critically acclaimed productions, including her award-winning direction of “Faith Healer” in 2019 and “A Streetcar Named Desire” in 2023.
Diverse and Engaging Programmes
Under Newman’s leadership, Pitlochry Festival Theatre has offered a diverse array of performances, establishing itself as Scotland’s leading producer of musical theatre and a champion of ensemble practice. Noteworthy productions include “Footloose” and “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical”, both of which continue to draw large audiences, building on the success of past hits like the 2023 production of “Sunshine on Leith”.

I think every theatre has to be rooted in its own place, in the landscape, in the community, and in the stories that come from that place or mean something to it”.

“Working with the amazing team here in Pitlochry has been wonderful, and I’ve especially loved collaborating with Kris Bryce (Executive Director). His tenacity and energy have inspired me every day,” Newman said. “I’m proud that we have produced more new Scottish work, supported more artists and participants, and reached more new audiences than ever before.”

The search for a new Artistic Director will be conducted by Saxton Bampfylde, with a public application process aimed at finding an exceptional candidate to build on Newman’s legacy. In the interim, the talented artistic team at Pitlochry Festival Theatre will ensure the continuity of its high-quality productions.

Newman’s vision extended beyond the stage, championing initiatives like the Shades of Tay project and the Sound Stage online platform. Reflecting on her broader impact, Newman said, “As well as staging work that’s welcoming and enjoyable for everyone, it’s also very important to me to stage compelling, important, arresting drama that asks big questions about the political situation in which we find ourselves at the moment, about who we are and who we want to be; but that also leave us a flicker of hope”.
