George Zacharopoulos is a very funny human being, he is also a very likeable human being. It’s a winning combination alone. When you add in his completely remarkable recent history, romantically speaking, you have a recipe for an utterly charming hour of comedy.
You really do have to see this show to believe it. It’s just so cleverly put together, a masterclass in comedic storytelling, which keeps its huge secret right till the close. ‘Wonderland’ is also a very personal show, as George recounts a life-defining affair, as well as exploring his own friend-centred world view.
A head-over-heels George is capable of saying, and doing all sort of remarkable things. He’s very aware of his tendency to foot-in-mouth syndrome, and isn’t embarrassed to share his unlikely sayings with the audience. Exploring his love of friendships, he draws on references from Toy Story to a traumatic encounter with Brokeback Mountain.
All of which may lead you to guess wrong if asked to name George’s favourite animal? A clue: ‘it don’t give a f**k”. Expect much admiration for said beast, its lifecycle painted in shades of rockstar.
George is sharp with one-liners, but even deadlier when building up a ridiculous scene plucked from his own life. Even in the show’s darkest moments, George is never far from a spectacularly funny line. I don’t want to say too much more, as this is a show best discovered than pre-explained.
Very funny, and utterly surprising, go see Go see George Zacharopoulos: Wonderland before it leaves town. It is, without question, one of the best hours of comedy on offer this August.
