44 Sex Acts in One Week is what the Italians call a “café corretto”, or a “correct coffee” – ie an espresso with a shot of booze. Why? The laughs will hit you fast and hard, give you an excellent buzz and send you out into the world a more charismatic and compelling person.

What misconceptions do you think people have about you/your show – would you like to clear them up?

Misconceptions about 44 Sex Acts is that it is just an hilarious Benny Hill romp. Yes, it is non-stop hilarious (we’ve had people dash to the bathroom because they were laughing so hard) yes, we do silly things with fruit. But, it’s also egalitarian, patriarchy-smashing, late-stage capitalism obliterating, empathic, relatable, and profound. How? Come see!

What brings a nice show like yours to a place like the Edinburgh Fringe?

Edinburgh Fringe is akin to a relationship that isn’t good for me – Every year I’m like, “I’m never going back”, then it’s, “A few days won’t hurt” but last year I only did a week felt very left out so will now to full runs until the end of time… probably.

How will the audience remember you the morning after?

A show of mine once got described as “anecdotal art” and that’s what I try to bring to all my shows. As well as that I hope this one will be remembered as a raw and honest memorable yarn with utmost hilarity.

If you/your show were a school subject what would you/it be and why?

P.E but with a forged sick-note, apart from when it’s long distance running where I’d run for 200m then hide behind a hedge smoking Superkings. There was an outdoor swimming pool at my school, we were once waiting for ages until we could swim in it, I asked what the hold up was and was told, “They’re fishing a dead seagull out of it!” My show definitely has this essence of Cornish feral and unruly.

How do you keep your performances fresh every night?

I take an ice cold shower, rob a bank, and complete a series of warmups based on the teachings of Konstantin Stanislavsky. After this, I’m always loose and extremely sensitive to the needs and impulses of my audience.

What coffee would you/your show be, and why?

BANGTAIL is a piping hot cup of diner coffee: black with bits of grounds and grit—the kind of coffee you can only get between the hours of 3-6 AM at a road stop in rural America. It’s the coffee real men drink, of cowboys and office workers to fuel for a big day of being a very serious and tough man.

How will the audience remember you the morning after?

I think they will be equally in love with, intimidated by, and in awe of my masculine prowess.

What brings a nice show like yours to a place like the Edinburgh Fringe?

I like dancing and doing stand-up, and I’m pretty good at both of them, AND I’m a show-off so the Fringe is the perfect place to do a show at people. Rudder is about my relationship with my body, sex, alcohol, and eventually learning to take care of myself.

What coffee would you/your show be, and why?

The show would be an espresso martini, because it’s a tasty mixture of stand-up to keep you awake, and dance to make you feel all horny and stuff, probably. Also you’ll feel cool when you consume it.

What do you/your show do to make an audience’s heart beat faster?

I take most of my clothes off at the end, which is hopefully exciting for the audience’s hearts rather than filling them with abject terror.

How do you keep your performances fresh every night?

We’ve invited Nina Gold (casting director of Star Wars and Game of Thrones) to every night of the show, but we’re not sure what she looks like, so we will be performing as if our careers depend on it each and every day. (Because they just might.)

What misconceptions do you think people have about you/your show – would you like to clear them up?

1. People assume that we’re multi-roling. WRONG. We’re actually two sets of identical quadruplets doing a show where only two people are onstage at a time (it just worked out like that). Booking accommodations for the cast has been a nightmare. 2. People aren’t sure if we’re serious. NEWSFLASH: the show is VERY serious and we’re serious about it. Seriously. 3. The National Youth Theatre scandal and lawsuit were all a big misunderstanding.

What do you/your show do to make an audience’s heart beat faster?

There will be a “splash zone”. That is all I’m permitted to disclose at this time.

What brings a nice show like yours to a place like the Edinburgh Fringe?

All answers written by Amy Conway, writer of Catafalque: Who says it’s a “nice show”? The Fringe is full of dark corners, with dark shows, exploring even darker subject matter, so where better to premier a show about a funeral celebrant.

What coffee would you/your show be, and why?

Definitely black coffee, no sugar. Catafalque is not sweet and frothy by any means, but it is dark and rich with complex flavours. I love exploring the big questions in life; Why are we here? Where are we going? Is there anything beyond the limits of our earthly experience? I’m hoping that along with those complex flavours, everyone can get a caffeine buzz of hope and perspective that will carry them through their day.

What misconceptions do you think people have about you/your show – would you like to clear them up?

That it will be depressing. It is about death, yes, but -not to get too new age about it- death allows for rebirth, for new life to grow in its place. And a funeral is a language, a structure that we can all relate to, it brings people together for better or worse, it is confronting in itself because it forces us to remember that we will die too and makes our lives all the more precious for this remembering.

I don’t. It’s exactly the same, every day. Every. Single. Goddamn. Day. (Also an audience member gets to repeatedly shoot me with a bubble gun. So that keeps me clean at least.)

What brings a nice show like yours to a place like the Edinburgh Fringe?

My debut comedy hour is about coming out in my 30s – while married to a man. So I’m up here bringing the show! Plus, I’m single and I feel like parading myself in front of a load of women every night might work better than the apps? I feel like women from apps are often put off by my general vibe (a bit Homer Simpson) but if people have seen me in the flesh to start with we’ll be on a solid footing. Is that a good reason?
