A Fringe Quickie (#294) with ‘Beth Wants the D’

Questions answered by Beth May.

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

Wincing the Night Away by the Shins. It’s fun and complex, takes me back to when I was first kind of starting to find my creative voice and finding out what I like, and I think I’m gonna need to feel young again to make it the whole run.

Q2: If your show had a criminal record, what would it be for?

I read that in Scotland it’s illegal to gamble in a library. And yet that’s probably exactly what my show would be doing, whispering “double or nothing” into the reference section.

Q3: What’s the temperature of your show?

I’d describe my show’s temp as something like a broken thermostat – comes in pretty hot, gets really chilly, but heats back up right before you get hypothermia.

Q4: What’s the moment in your show that makes people laugh when they’re not sure they’re supposed to?

Without giving too much away, I’d probably say the beginning of the show. I’ve had an audience member describe it as “the most second-hand embarrassment they’ve ever had followed by the biggest relief.”
