Win a Meal for 2 at the Haggis Box

Since 2020, whilst I’ve been reviewing shows at the Scottish Storytelling Centre, the utterly splendid Haggis Box has been in charge of the Centre’s cafe. I consider myself something of a haggis connoisseur. Scotland’s national dish is too often underseasoned and underspiced, but not so at the Haggis Box.

They serve it with neeps and tatties – that’s mashed turnip and potato to non-Scots speakers – and a sauce of your choice. I prefer the delicious red wine gravy, but those hunting an even more traditional experience might prefer the Auchentoshan whisky & mustard sauce.

They also do a lovely vegetarian/vegan haggis – such things are possible!

“A dish consisting of the pluck or heart, lungs and liver of a sheep minced and mixed with suet, oatmeal, onion and seasoning and boiled in a sheep’s maw or stomach. Gen.Sc. Now regarded as a traditionally Scottish dish, but also popular in England until the beginning of the 18th cent. and still made in n.Eng. with some variation of the ingredients. Also used fig. as a term of contempt for a person. Adj. combs. haggis-fedhaggis-headed, fig. blockheaded, stupid.”

From the Scottish National Dictionary (1700–)

Of course, the Haggis Box provide much more. I live on Haggis Box tea through every Summer Festival and have been known to scoff a small mountain of shortbread or delicious traybake when suffering beneath the weight of too many deadlines. Later in the day their ample supply of bottled beer and cider becomes most welcome. Oh, and the coffee’s great for any needing a proper caffeine boost. There’s much more on the menu, savour and sweet, but you don’t need me to give you an exhaustive rundown.

Well, Laura, the ever delightful owner of the Haggis Box has been kind enough to offer readers of theQR a chance to win a lunch for two! Here’s what one lucky winner will receive:

Lunch for 2 including 2 mains, 2 soft drinks, 2 traybakes or cakes, and 2 hot drinks. That’s right, you could have 2 gorgeous haggis mains, 2 tasty soft-drinks, 2 of their continually brilliant hand-baked cakes or traybakes, and 2 hot drinks!

Trust me it’ll be brilliant!

TheQR couldn’t be more grateful for this show of support of local independent arts journalism from such a respected local independent business. When any of our readers go to the Haggis Box be sure to mention we sent you!

Let me repeat, you could win a delicious lunch for 2 people just for showing theQR a little love, and it couldn’t be easier. So don’t be haggis-fed and get entering! Enter by August 12th 2024! Winner announced August 13th!
