A Fringe Quickie (#355) with ‘Anime-Zing! Game Show’

Questions answered by Soness Stevens Kitano.

Q1: Aside from this Quickie, what is the most desperate marketing tactic you plan on using to get bums in seats this August? 280 chars

The posters are hand-crafted art tied together with the Japanese “red string of fate.” (in my venues): the solo show poster is a tactile collage, the Anime-Zing! Game Show and Anime-Zing KIDS! posters connect with red thread promising people who are destined to meet.

Q2: If your show walked into a cocktail bar, what would it order?

Shirley Temple. My mom auditioned for a Shirley Temple film. and SHE GOT IT! But she didn’t know because her mom told her she didn’t get it. Years later, on a bus, the girl who got her role asked why she declined the part. In Anime-Zing!, YOU can be the star you were born to be.

Q3: The Fringe is horribly expensive. How are you financing this run? Did you remortgage your house, sell your granny, or start an illicit side hustle?

I have a sumo injury. Literally, ruptured my achilles sumo wrestling. My physio is now a partial sponsor for my shows.

Q4: We all have weird pre-performance rituals. What is yours, and how confused would a normal person be if they walked in on you doing it?

My Japanese neighbors must think my husband beats me. I’m a voice actor, so my warm-ups and auditions include screaming. I’m just waiting for the police to come knocking out of concern for my well-being. Turns out, my neighbors just don’t care.
