EdFringe Review: Caitlin Cook: The Writing on the Stall

Image

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Caitlin Cook is a fascinating individual. How often does one encounter academic, musical comedians with a Masters based upon toilet graffiti? That’s right, not very often.

The funny part of her show is almost exclusively derived from this passion. Over time, Caitlin has assembled quite a treasure trove of images captured in the various public conveniences by herself and (I presume) other contributors.

Bite-size toilet philosophy, iconography and overt crudity (d*ck drawings and similar) form the basis for her song lyrics and her off-the-toilet-wall philosophy of life.

“How often does one encounter academic, musical comedians with a Masters based upon toilet graffiti?”

Taking things one degree further, Caitlin presents her show from a ladies’ room cubicle, complete with a toilet. There’s enough room to swing a guitar, fortunately.

It’s certainly an inventive, and original approach to comedy. Caitlin frequently makes the audience laugh with a well-timed, and well-delivered, graffiti-based lyric. Some of the artwork plucked from the stalls also provokes a solid titter or two.

On the other hand, some of the framing, not least a fictional run-in with a mean patron at a Pleasance Dome bar beforehand feels forced. Caitlin’s darkly outre worldview is more than enough to signal the formative trauma in her teenage past.

Said trauma is quite the hammer blow when it turns up, so those vulnerable to themes of fatal accidents would also do well to read up before attending.

Nonetheless, Caitlin Cook is an able comedian with a genuinely novel take on toilet humour. The show remains interesting and genuinely funny journey through Caitlin’s personal darkness. On the other hand, she’s been touring this show, or a version of it for a couple of years now, and if she comes back next year, it would be nice to see her devise something new.
