Many young comedians lean heavily on angst-ridden rants, but Ania Magliano offers a refreshing and hilarious departure from the norm. In her third solo show at the Edinburgh Fringe, Ania captivates audiences with her candid exploration of irrational behaviour and twisted logic, which form the central threads of her performance.
Ania opens with light, innocuous topics, warming up the crowd and quickly winning them over to her side. Her ability to pivot from these seemingly trivial subjects to the more substantial theme of the show (it’s very hard to avoid spoilers) is seamless, using the top five celebrity breakups as a clever segue.
She intertwines these early topics throughout the narrative, creating a cohesive and engaging show. Ania’s comedy style shines here, combining witty, relatable storytelling with personal anecdotes and sharp humor.
“Ania’s blend of honesty, humour, and heart quickly wins over her audiences.”
With a title like “Forgive Me, Father,” one might anticipate a focus on religion. Instead, Ania takes us through themes of divorce, commitment, and contraception, leading to an unexpected and sweet emotional conclusion.
Her burgeoning talent as a storyteller is evident, with her performance peppered with excellent one-liners and anecdotes that add depth and humour, turning everyday situations into comedic highlights. A personal highlight was the somewhat unexpected ‘kinky’ marriage jokes that caught the audience slightly off guard.
On the first official day of the Fringe, Forgive Me, Father was already on the sold-out board in the morning. If you want to see this show, be sure to buy your tickets soon!
