The Critic’s Dictionary: B

Bold artistic choices

Ambiguous: depends on context.

‘The Writer makes the bold artistic choice to set the Lear tale within the cut throat world of high finance’ indicated praise. Conversely, a statement beginning, ‘The director’s decision to render the entire text into binary code is certainly a bold artistic choice…’ will almost always end poorly.

Bold

Not a direction the critic would have chosen, but you do you! (Also a clothes’ washing product, so do take care lest they are actually commenting on the condition of the costumes.)

Brave

Some might consider your artistic choices akin to inviting disaster. Most times this word will feature in a positive review, but do beware the ‘valiant attempt’ critique.

Breaking barriers

No one thought it was possible to stage Waiting for Godot with trained dogs. Woof!

Brings a smile

You guessed it…not a musical.
