#SNAPCHATZ Episode 19: Boundary-pushing comedy at #EdFringe

Image

Today, exemplifying boundary-pushing comedy on the Fringe stagestage are sexual anxiety anathema Eleanor May Blackburn, the wonderfully unhinged love-chasing Rosalie Minnitt, and 69 Tik-Tok-but-on-stage skits from The Biscuit Barrel!

#SNAPCHATZ is simple. I challenge all 2023 Fringe performers & creators to answer 3 questions and to sell you, dear reader, their show. Their answers are tossed into a digital hat, and published in quick-read trios. It’s a Fringe goer’s fastest and safest (no guerilla flyering!) way to find someone, or something, new.

If you like what you read, you’re intrigued, you bark a laugh or shed a tear, or you suspect some risk of lasting trauma, then click those links and buy a ticket, or 10!

Does My Fanny Look Big in This?

Who are you/what is your show?

I’m Ellie (Eleanor) and my show is Does My Fanny Look Big in This? Named by my mother believe it or not.

What sets your show apart from the rest?

My show is special because it talks about sexual anxiety – something that no one is speaking about but almost everyone is facing; plus sex education plus sexual trauma through comedy and poetry.

Your dream audience turns up to see the show, who’s watching?

I feel like I’d be lying if I didn’t say Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Bryony Kimmings and Michaela Coel (all iconic queens) but I wish my granddad could see it because as much as I love him I feel like he’d learn a thing or 2 about feminism. Seeing me talk about sex in such detail though might just push him over the edge so maybe not.

Rosalie Minnitt: Clemantine

Who are you/what is your show?

My name is Rosalie Minnitt and I’m a writer and comedian based in London. My show is a one-woman character comedian whirlwind hour that follows the eponymous, Lady Clementine, on her quest to find true love. It’s unhinged, surreal and wonderfully wild.

What sets your show apart from the rest?

It’s not just your average character comedy show, or regency spoof. It takes place in its own universe where the laws of history – and physics – certainly don’t apply. I wanted to make a show that I would want to see so I think what sets it apart is that it’s unapologetically a reflection of my humour and doesn’t try to be anything more than pure, unadulterated escapism.

Your dream audience turns up to see the show, who’s watching?

Excellent question! Of course, my dream audience would be packed to the rafters with my comedy heroes – think Natasha Demetriou, Julio Torres and Ilana Glazer. Having said that, if my heroes were in the front row, I’d probably freeze, forget my own name and run away immediately. My achievable dream is an audience of keen, open-minded fringe goers who are up for something a bit different.

Biscuit Barrel: The 69-Sketch Show

Who are you/what is your show?

We’re The Biscuit Barrel, a Bristol-based comedy group who we perform 69 sketches in an hour (number’s deliberate). Prepare for insecure self-checkout machines, the dark secrets of Quorn-farming, plus a bandit breaking into the show and disrupting it throughout.

What sets your show apart from the rest?

We’ve made a show for terrible attention spans. So many people damaged theirs after watching too much TikTok during the pandemic, and we’ve basically put TikTok on a stage. We’re here to prove that live theatre isn’t ‘the slow option’.

Your dream audience turns up to see the show, who’s watching?

We’ve mixed old-fashioned slapstick with the snappy internet stuff, so we’ve already seen a mix of young and old. However, Steve Martin randomly turning up to validate us would be lovely. Christ might find it funny too.
