• A Fringe Quickie (#69) with ‘The Truth About Trees’

    Questions answered by Apropos Theatre.

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

Comfort, for sure. Ideally something with some birdsong hidden behind the music. Probably something simple, by a singer-songwriter who spends most of their time sitting in a forest, watching trees grow.

Q2: What’s something your show reveals about you that might surprise a date?

That because paper is made from trees, if you make paper in the right way, you can get the tree to tell its own story.

Q3: If your show had a criminal record, what would it be for?

100% protesting and standing up for what you believe in, that seems to be a crime now.

Q4: What’s the temperature of your show?

Too warm in this last warming world.

  • A Fringe Quickie (#68) with ‘Because’

    Questions answered by Hassan Govia.

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

‘Break My Soul’ by Beyoncé. In spite of the excitement I feel about taking my work to the Fringe, the preparation alone has presented many challenges and I know there are more to come. However, they will not break my soul, and I am determined to be an EdFringe 2025 success story.

Q2: What’s the moment in your show that makes people laugh when they’re not sure they’re supposed to?

Because’ hasn’t been staged with intent to make anyone laugh but I’m sure there will be a significant number of audience members who will grasp at any light relief they can muster. When might this happen? My guess is when Jade’s (our central character’s) Mum makes an appearance…

Q3: If your show sent a drunk text at 3am, what would it say?

“oMGFIDont’knw weretf i amrightno w eVrythngs spinnnnnnnning. i NEEd 2gethome–butidn’tknowweeerehome is..Idont knw wher- FIGUREITOUTANDSTOPWHINING.” Interestingly there is a reference to drunk messaging in Because… but instead of being funny, it is more shocking and unsettling.

Q4: If your show had a criminal record, what would it be for?

Winning all eligible awards then falsely being accused and charged of stealing them. The rookie who defied the odds won over the more recognised names and Fringe staples. I can dream, can’t I? I think the show is worthy… and hopefully you’re now curious to see if it is too!

  • A Fringe Quickie (#67) with ‘Sink or SING!’

    Questions answered by Amelie Peters.

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

“This Is What Dreams Are Made Of” – when I’m running on 3 hours sleep, 2 espresso martinis, and 17 costume changes… I NEED a delulu soundtrack. It’s giving fake lashes, real breakdowns, and pop-star-level confidence. If Hilary could slay Rome, I can slay Edinburgh Fringe.

Q2: How will the audience remember you the morning after?

Both you and your partner will sing the songs on repeat for WEEKS! Like, sorry not sorry but this is totally your Troy and Gabriella moment. Consider it your Fringe soundtrack glow-up. You’re welcome x

Q3: If your show had a pick-up line, what would it be?

I’m not saying I’ll change your life… but after one session with me, your neighbours will definitely hear the difference.

Q4: If your show sent a drunk text at 3am, what would it say?

U up? I just taught a room full of girlies how to sing and now I’m crying in Macca’s wearing sequins and one eyelash. I love you. No, like, I really love you. Also, guess who just DM’d me AGAIN, I’m gonna reply hehe

  • A Fringe Quickie (#66) with ‘Copla: a Spanish Cabaret’

    Questions answered by Alejandro Postigo.

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

“Volver” by Estrella Morente — because sometimes you need a soundtrack for your drama, your healing, and your messy fabulous return from exile. Flamenco comforts and haunts all at once. That’s how I find home again.

Q2: What moment in your show would your grandma absolutely hate (or absolutely love)?

My grandma’s 103 and very much alive — and in the show! She sings, talks about her life, and usually gets the loudest applause. She once told me, “If you’re going to be queer, make it unforgettable.” So I put her onstage… and she loves it.

Q3: Is your show the type to leave a toothbrush — or just some wild memories and a dent in the pillow?

It leaves behind red lipstick on your mirror, my grandmother’s fan, and a revolutionary song stuck in your head. And it leaves a castanet under your pillow — just in case you dream in Spanish tonight.

Q4: What’s the temperature of your show?

Simmering. Like a pressure cooker of unresolved exile, queer rage, and lipstick-stained microphones. Nostalgia, guilt, and glamour boiling together. It burns and it heals!

  • A Fringe Quickie (#65) with ‘Frenzy’

    Questions answered by kit loyd.

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

Time by Hans Zimmer. I have a bit in my show where I prove any task can be made epic with Hans Zimmer. It’s true! I used to do my coursework at uni to Hans Zimmer and I felt like I was breaking the enigma code.

Q2: If your show walked into a bar, what would it order?

“I’ll have a vodka martini shaken AND stirred….” Then the show would wink at the man behind the bar, flick a piece of gum into its mouth and put on a pair of cool shades. The guy behind the bar would say ‘we don’t serve vodka martinis, it’s 9am and this is Pret’.

Q3: If your show sent a drunk text at 3am, what would it say?

I once accidentally triggered the emergency SOS on my phone at 3am when I was at a rave. It sent a text to my mum, dad, two sisters and my boss all at the same time with the location of the rave saying that I was in immediate danger. I feel like my show would do that.

Dark Side of the Moon – Pink Floyd, because it slaps cover to cover.

    “My Mum’s dead”

Q3: If your show sent a drunk text at 3am, what would it say?

    I just committed a crime.

    Questions answered by Woody Fu.

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

Jason Bourne soundtrack – put this on and navigate the Edinburgh crowds. Makes every walk to Underbelly truly epic, suddenly you are on a mission and people are trying to kill you. Bonus points if you listen to it while on a bike!

Q2: If your show had a pick-up line, what would it be?

“Damn girl, are you Tom Hardy’s character Alfie Solomons from Peaky Blinders? Because you are compelling but I have no idea what you’re saying.”

Snogging a goose (long necks are comely)

  • A Fringe Quickie (#62) with ‘I REGRET THIS ALREADY’

    Questions answered by Bennett Arron.

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

“Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien” by Edith Piaf. Not only is it a great song, it’s also relevant to my show. It also reminds me of a girl I went out with who was half Welsh and half French. We didn’t have a great relationship but, as I once said to her, Je Ne Regrette, Rhian.

Q2: What’s the moment in your show that makes people laugh when they’re not sure they’re supposed to?

Right at the beginning when I explain that show will cover the topics of Dementia, Depression and Death.

Q3: How will the audience remember you the morning after?

The tall, thin, young, handsome, Scottish guy. Until they open their eyes and the sobering actuality hits them.

Q4: If your show had a criminal record, what would it be for?

Stealing the identity of the Home Secretary! Oh no, wait, I actually did that. And got arrested for it in a dawn raid by Scotland Yard…..

Questions answered by Andy Boyd .

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

My Chemical Romance – The Black Parade Why?? Because despite being 37, I’m still an emo kid at heart – it’s the ultimate track, just imagine listening to this for the first time?! Mind-blowing… And you can summon all the other black-hearted kids out there one single note

Q2: If your show sent a drunk text at 3am, what would it say?

Come and see all the cool things I’ve learnt how to do since I dropped out of university and had a ‘stint’ of being a bartender for 13 years, and then after performing at sea since 2020 discovered that I can’t function of land any more and now all I have is the Fringe

Q3: If your show had a pick-up line, what would it be?

You show me your party trick – I’ll show you everything I have to offer because magic isn’t enough so I thought I’d cover all the bases just to be sure, why stop at making that little red handkerchief disappear?! Hold my drink – I’m going to balance this hat on my face

  • A Fringe Quickie (#60) with ‘Sad Girl Songs’

    Questions answered by Gwen Coburn.

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

100% sincerely, the Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Megamix.

Q2: If your show walked into a bar, what would it order?

A Dark N’ Stormy: spicy, sparkly, fun with a bit of bite to it.

Q3: What’s your trick for leaving your audience begging for more — or begging you to stop?

My favorite thing is to write a catchy song about a difficult topic. The trick is to treat it seriously– sure, it’s a comedy song, but it’s also a Celine Dion inspired romantic ballad called “Thank You For Not Murdering Me” and god as my witness there will be full orchestrations

Q4: What moment in your show would your grandma absolutely hate (or absolutely love)?

The ragtime number titled “You Should Know Where The Clit Is”. She’d love it, Nana was a badass.

  • A Fringe Quickie (#59) with ‘Aerosmith to ZZ Top with Steve McLean’

    Questions answered by Steve McLean.

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

Anne’s Song – Faith No More. I figured my show meant I should chose an 80s rock song. The first two FNM albums are peerless. Everyone else is singing about Paradise cities while Chuck Mosley was singing about the suit of armour that comes from being in love.

Q2: If your show had a criminal record, what would it be for?

My show is all about records of the 1980s. A lot of them are criminal.

Q3: What moment in your show would your grandma absolutely hate (or absolutely love)?

The ending. My gran was one of the most encouraging people in the world and she loved that I wanted to be a performer as a child. It’s balanced out by my other gran who was 97% Satan and would laugh every time I fell over.

Q4: If your show had a pick-up line, what would it be?

Do you know what would look good on you? A bandana…. they look good on everyone!

    Erik Satie

Q2: What’s your trick for leaving your audience begging for more — or begging you to stop?

Always leave them wanting more. Better yet, don’t even give them anything at all.

Q3: If your show had a safe word, what would it be? And would it use it?

Mine would forget the safe word and play cool and pretend that they didn’t need it, while secretly dying inside. The word would be ‘banana’.

Q4: What moment in your show would your grandma absolutely hate (or absolutely love)?

There’s a bit where a character gets mocked for being a racist. She would be furious that people were laughing.

    Questions answered by Alice-India.

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

It is, was and always will be Let Me Entertain You by Robbie Williams. As a man who has known the dizzying highs, terrifying lows and creamy middles of show biz, that’s where I like to take my guidance. It never fails to make me feel like I could break rocks with my bare hands.

Q2: If your show sent a drunk text at 3am, what would it say?

“R u mad at me?” And then 1 minute later “do u still love me”

Q3: If your show had a safe word, what would it be? And would it use it?

It would be “Stay with me.” It would use it frequently.

Q4: What’s your trick for leaving your audience begging for more — or begging you to stop?

Take it one step further. And then literally 10 more steps – for good measure.

    Questions answered by Simon Paris.

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

Running Up That Hill – Kate Bush. It would help me cope with the fact that somehow, in every direction in Edinburgh, it is somehow uphill.

Q2: What’s your trick for leaving your audience begging for more — or begging you to stop?

There is a part of the show that goes on for as long as it takes an audience member to get it right. Sorry if you’ve booked any shows for after us…

Q3: What moment in your show would your grandma absolutely hate (or absolutely love)?

    Questions answered by Joz Norris.

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

“Wrecking Ball” by Bruce Springsteen (an original song which just happens to share a title with the Miley Cyrus number rather than being a Miley Cyrus cover, although I think Bruce could pull off swinging naked on an actual wrecking ball just as well as Miley).

Q2: What’s the moment in your show that makes people laugh when they’re not sure they’re supposed to?

I think this is a good description of the entire show. I like to keep audiences on their toes. “Is this bit deliberate?” Who knows? Life is a dance! So put your shoes on!

Q3: If your show sent a drunk text at 3am, what would it say?

Q4: What’s the temperature of your show?

My show is a chill wind that blows through the audience’s soul. You might think this sounds like a bad thing for a comedy show, but the audience has no choice but to huddle together for warmth, thus building community in the face of my show’s icy indifference.

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

Why do you treat me so bad? We need to break up – to social norms 💔😭

    Questions answered by Liz Bains.

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

Chapelle Roan Pink Pony Club – it is a feel-good sing-along song, but you shouldn’t analyse the words too much.

Q2: If your show walked into a bar, what would it order?

Pina colada – it evokes a holiday in Cuba, where the cars might be old and clunky, but they are a classic and comfortable ride.

Q3: What moment in your show would your grandma absolutely hate (or absolutely love)?

I have a four-minute-long absurd bit about a monument in Liverpool that it weaves in history. It is simultaneously funny and informative about the Titanic and women’s rights. She would certainly have loved that.

  • A Fringe Quickie (#50) with ‘Absurd Hero’

    Questions answered by April Alsup.

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

“I’d take silence—the only record that truly speaks the absurd. But if I had to pick a song, it’d be the steady heartbeat, stubbornly playing on… like an encore no one asked for.”

Q2: What moment in your show would your grandma absolutely hate (or absolutely love)?

“If my show had a criminal record, it’d be for jaywalking through your expectations — because to live like an absurd hero is to treat every red light as a dare, not a warning.”

Q3: What’s something your show reveals about you that might surprise a date?

“The Absurd Hero reveals that beneath his calm acceptance of meaninglessness, he’s still desperately clinging to hope—mostly the hope that his date won’t run away when the silence gets too loud.”

Q4: If your show had a pick-up line, what would it be?

“Maybe we don’t have to make sense of the world. Some things are better when they don’t make sense. So, let’s steal this moment — the universe won’t mind, and neither will I.”

    Questions answered by Nick Everritt.

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

Meghan Trainor’s All About That Bass brings back fond memories of the time I was briefly interned in a Russian prisoner of war camp. I think it was intended as a method of torture, but unfortunately for ‘the reds’ I think it’s a tune.

Q2: What’s something your show reveals about you that might surprise a date?

My dates are often under the impression that I’m a socially inept weirdo who looks like a German serial killer. But I’m actually a completely normal man, who is in no way creepy or unsettling. I spend a great deal of time in my show trying to convince the audience of this.

Q3: What’s your trick for leaving your audience begging for more — or begging you to stop?

I never – NEVER – meet the audience half way. If they’re not enjoying my deadpan, meta anti-comedy, I’m not going to lose my bottle and dip into impromptu crowd-work to get them back onside. I’m going to double down. My pan will be deader than ever.

Q4: If your show had a pick-up line, what would it be?

Hey girl, are you a loaded crossbow? Because I’d like to hold you in my arms while I sleep.

Questions answered by Old’n’Dead Productions .

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

The Horrible Histories soundtrack! Horrible histories was our main inspiration because let’s be honest, it rocks! The history is legit and the songs are really catchy. I became a highway man, was daylight robbery! Hell yes!

Q2: If your show had a pick-up line, what would it be?

Charles ii may not have started the great fire of 1666 but he might light yours

Q3: If your show had a criminal record, what would it be for?

Arson and crimes of passion. The fire of london is hot and Charles the 2nd’s passion for ladies knows no bounds.

Q4: How will the audience remember you the morning after?

Like a historical fever dream. We want our audiences to walk out having laughed and learnt but also thinking: what the hell did I just watch, and why did I love it?

  • A Fringe Quickie (#47) with ‘Dickie Richards Sexual Tyrannosaur 2025’

    Questions answered by Dickie Richards.

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

You Don’t Have To Cry by Crosby, Stills & Nash. This track reminds me that I was once unhappily in the rat-race with job and that I’m free of that now, free to stupidly lark about onstage making people laugh!

Q2: How will the audience remember you the morning after?

The vision of me will be emblazoned on their retinas and their sides will ache.

Q3: What’s the temperature of your show?

    HOT!

Q4: What’s the moment in your show that makes people laugh when they’re not sure they’re supposed to?

    The BIG Finale!

  • A Fringe Quickie (#45) with ‘PSA: Pelvic Service Announcement’

    Questions answered by Amy Veltman.

Q1: If you could take just one record with you to survive the Fringe — your ultimate comfort, hype, or grounding track — what would it be, and why?

Beyoncé’s Renaissance. It is comfort (after so many listens), hype (can’t sit still), and grounding (She is a living pep talk about hard work and bottomless creativity). I try to keep jumping to a minimum as I dance, unless my pelvic floor is feeling super fortified.

Q2: How will the audience remember you the morning after?

If they’re like past audiences, they’ll think of me during their morning constitutional. I consider this the highest praise!

Q3: What’s the moment in your show that makes people laugh when they’re not sure they’re supposed to?

You described my whole show! I needed loads of silly, immature gags, songs, and characters to share my embarrassing pelvic floor odyssey, but psychiatrists consider humor a “mature” defence mechanism to cope with discomfort. Ergo, laughing at my show is a sign of maturity.

Q4: What’s something your show reveals about you that might surprise a date?

“PSA: Pelvic Service Announcement” reveals plenty that even my husband of twenty-plus years never knew! In fact, the show may be history’s most elaborate scheme for someone to gently ask their partner to shower and slather on a nice scent before trying to get busy.
