#EdFringe 2023 – #SNAPCHATZ – Episode 11

#SNAPCHATZ 2023 - #EDFRINGE 2023 - TheQR.co.uk

#SNAPCHATZ is simple. I challenge all 2023 Fringe performers & creators to answer 3 questions and to sell you, dear reader, their show. Their answers are tossed into a digital hat, and published in quick-read trios. It’s a Fringe goer’s fastest, safest (no guerilla flyering!) way to find someone or something new.

If you like what you read; if you’re intrigued; if you bark a laugh or shed a tear; if you suspect some risk of lasting trauma, then click those links and buy a ticket or 10. Today’s brave band of would-be indelible Fringe memories are love letter to a dysfunctional Mam, No One Is Coming, mysterious stand-up Nathan D’Arcy Roberts, and musical raconteuse Annabel Marlow!

Who are you/what is your show?

Hi I’m Sinéad O’Brien, an Irish storyteller and theatre maker. My show is “No One is Coming” it will be at the Scottish Storytelling Centre for Edinburgh Fringe. It’s a dark comedic storytelling show about me and my Mam.

What sets your show apart from the rest?

It’s a love letter to my Mam that I will never send. It’s a storytelling adventure mixing the weird and wonderful stories from Irish myths and personal stories of growing up as the weird kid with a Mam with mental health issues. Hopefully no one ends up to traumatised…  I mean I came out amazingly well adjusted all things considered. It’ll be grand

Your dream audience turns up to see the show, who’s watching?

My dream audience is more than 5 people, I really don’t want the show name to become a self fulfilling prophecy! Performing in the Scottish Storytelling centre is already the dream; an audience who love stories and black comedy and their Mam, even if it’s from a safe distance. Actually particularly, if you love your family despite their dysfunction.

Who are you/what is your show?

My show Present/Tense is an hour of stand up covering toxic masculinity, the Mixed-Race experience and McDonalds. But mostly it’s about my attempt to escape the shadow of the past and not worry too much about the future. I don’t want to give too much about the show away up front. The joy of seeing shows is going in blind and finding out what it’s about for yourself.

What sets your show apart from the rest?

My show is rooted in personal storytelling. It centres around the shock discovery from my past and the way that has ricocheted through my life. I can guarantee that there isn’t a single show like mine this year. With the notable exception of my twin brother’s bullsh*t rip-off show ‘Present/Tense Redux’ which is beat-for-beat exactly the same as mine.

Your dream audience turns up to see the show, who’s watching?

Full house. Back to back applause breaks. I’m carried out on everyone’s shoulders like Khaleesi. Denzel Washington gives me nod as if to say ‘you did it kid.’

Who are you/what is your show?

I’m Annabel Marlow, I’m a comedian, musician and actor and this year I’m having my solo show debut!!!

What sets your show apart from the rest?

I ran ’…is this okay ??’ to a group of friends in my brother’s living room, and I think what will set my show apart is that it will feel just like that in Edinburgh and onwards! We’ll all go on a lil journey with these songs that I’ve written over the years, have some chats and giggles. It’s not trying to do, or say too much, but I know it will be an hour of good vibes and good music. And probably a lot of laughing fits and apologies on my part.

Your dream audience turns up to see the show, who’s watching?

My ideal audience is a full house of all my friends and family cause they’re obsessed with me (which is why I’m doing my first full out showings just to them). I basically write all my jokes and songs to make those people laugh, so I love sharing my stuff with them. But I hope that I create an atmosphere with my show that makes everyone feel like we’re just hanging out and are friends but also maybe we’ll flirt after what who said that?

Fringe 2023: #SNAPCHATZ will be published every day at 3pm with 3 new Fringe 2023 artists vying to be the best thing you see (after buying a ticket to) this year.
